Last Thursday I awoke to learn that I died almost a month ago. I was rebuilt from a highly experimental process of clockwork and cloning, and I don’t know why. One man knows my secret—my creator, the lead of the Leona Scientific Laboratory. He says knowledge isn’t free. I say that unless I know why I’m here, he’s the one who’s going to pay. My friend Jack Beasley has offered his help. He has inside knowledge about the laboratory and the man who runs it. I think he also knows something about me that he isn’t sharing. There’s no one I can trust now. Not even myself.

~To wake up not knowing who you are, but having a faint memory of who you were, and not completely aware of what you are capable of…Quite a challenge. This is what our main character, Ada Stirling, has to deal with.~I was hooked almost immediately by the idea of following Ada in her discovery who she was AND who she now is. I was not disappointed. The author, Amanda Clemmer, did an excellent job of leading Ada (and the reader) along a trail of mystery, danger, adventure, loyalty, and great inner discovery. Character development is very important to any story. In “Automaton” we see Ada develop and we begin to understand exactly what makes her tick.
~I found the other two characters, Jack Beasly and Mr. Steele, to be fine supporting characters, however, Ada is the start of this book.
~While this book is listed as Young Adult fiction, I think anyone remotely interested in sci-fi…or Steampunk…would find something to their liking in this story.
~This is a good stand-alone book…it tells a complete story without the typical cliff hanger ending of so many books. But wait! I have discovered there IS a sequel in the works. I am looking forward to reading it also.
~To sum it up, a well written adventure with a great heroine.

Automaton Amanda Clemmer 9781512387100 Books Reviews
A very confusing storyline, but the ending saved the day. I guess this would be called steampunk fiction? The imagination you have is wonderful, but is exhausting to to try to follow the plot to the end....lol. Thank you for an opportunity to read this book free in exchange for an honest review. DS
This looked really neat to me. I love science fiction. And the idea of bringing someone back from the dead as basically a robot? Pretty amazing right there.
I took some issues with how this novella was executed. When Ada first woke up as an automaton, I felt she accepted that fact far too quickly. Sure there's plenty of proof, but if she is emotionally the same as a human, shouldn't it affect her quite a lot? I mean, if you found out that you're not really human, what would you do? With that, I had a lot of trouble connecting with the main character. With most of the characters really. I liked Ada/Ace's friend Jack the most. But he had a small part. Maybe if this were longer the characters could have developed more.
I also want to know how Ada died. Was that plot just dropped? Or was the "it was an accident" really the full explanation? Because Ada/Ace insists she wouldn't trip down the stairs. So how did she really die? Even if it was an accident, what really happened?
A fun read, fantasy & a little science (but not too much.)
Pure entertainment, when short on time for a larger book.

Who is Ada and who is Ace? Ada is dead and Ace is her clone. But the question is why wads she created. How real is she? Who can she trust? Find out this and more in this steampunk SciFi story.
Had a lot of potential, but meandered about and in the end didn't make much sense.
This book has an intriguing beginning and story plot. I was a bit disappointed that the story was not fleshed out more, there are more stories that can be added. I wanted more--maybe that was the authors idea, lol.
The writing in this story is just bad. The formatting is all over the place, sometimes there is a random paragraph that is center justified for no reason. The characters are unrealistic and just plain ridiculous. <Not a Spoiler> The main character is an automaton with the memories of a dead girl inside. The concept is cool, but this is just handled so poorly. And the plot is just plain stupid, she is trying to find her murderer, okay, again cool. But the guy that put her into the machine has no idea why he was hired to do so? That is just a very weak limp to climb out on. This did not pass the 25% test.
